About

This is a blog for my translations focusing on works related to history and social movements. The name Tsuchigumo, or Earth Spider in English, was the name of a cave-dwelling tribe conquered by the ancient Yamato state according to Japanese legend. In 1843 Utagawa Kuniyoshi made a triptych depicting a tsuchigumo, but this time followed by a band of ghosts representing various oppressed groups, determined to challenge the shogunate authorities descended from the Yamato. In the same spirit, I hope my translations can make visible the oft ignored voices of dissent that appear in Japanese society.

I also do freelance translations. My rate is 2 yen per Japanese character. Contact at tsuchigumotranslations@gmail.com.
